Drawing inspiration from organic forms, ecological cycles, and the quiet resilience of human and wild environments, he creates immersive, functional sculptures using natural materials such as wood, fibre, copper, slate, and reuses found elements from organic materials to industrial equipment.

Rooted in both craft tradition and construction practice, Ray’s work breaks down the boundary between the built and the organic. Each piece is built layer upon layer, combining natural and crafted textures with hand-formed pieces to create sculptural, mixed-media works that invite touch, reflection, interaction, and a deeper awareness of space.

Originally from the Midlands, Ray developed an early fascination with the tactile qualities of the outdoors, an appreciation of industrial tools, carpentry, organic and human-created materials, and a deep respect for the natural world. This connection grew into a contemporary artistic practice, strengthened through studies in sculpture, painting, carpentry, material processes, and environmental art. His work often examines themes of functional objects and their beauty, encouraging viewers to consider the stories within natural materials and much-used items.

Now based in the New Forest, Ray explores how art can act as a meeting point between human intention and the quiet intelligence of the natural world, inspired by the truly amazing spaces he has lived and worked in throughout his life.

Meet Ray, Mixed media sculptor Ray’s work explores the profound relationship between humans and the natural world.
